Lecture by Professor Dr.-Ing. Ilke Marschall (Erfurt University of Applied Sciences) as part of the joint public lecture series ‘War and Peace’ organised by the City of Erfurt and Erfurt’s universities during the winter semester 2026/27.

Wars are, first and foremost, a source of immeasurable human suffering, but they also leave a deep mark on our landscapes. Fortifications, fortified churches, underground armoury sites, bunkers, mountains of rubble, and so on. They are silent witnesses to our history. Similarly, certificates of peace and remembrance – such as memorials, commemorative sites, ‘peace oaks’ or ‘stumbling stones’ – have become ingrained in the history of the Thuringian cultural landscape, amongst others, through the interplay of space, culture and people. What significance do these (physical) sites hold in our consciousness, and how do we intend to deal with them in the future? Professor Dr.-Ing. Ilke Marschall from Erfurt University of Applied Sciences will speak on this topic this evening.

The speaker:
Professor Dr.-Ing. Ilke Marschall has represented the Department of Landscape Planning at Erfurt University of Applied Sciences since 2009, where she primarily teaches on the Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes in Landscape Architecture. Ilke Marschall studied landscape conservation at the University of Hanover from 1985 to 1992. Whilst working on her doctorate and postdoctoral qualification, she was an employee and lecturer in the subject area of Architecture – Urban Planning – Landscape Planning (ASL) at the University of Kassel, as well as working on a freelance basis. As a member of various associations and organisations (including BBN and ARL), she is actively involved in various working groups across Germany, focusing, amongst other things, on the protection of nature and the cultural landscape.

Admission to the lectures in this lecture series is free. However, please note that seating in the Town Hall Ballroom is limited to 180.

Lecture series in the winter term 2026/27

In collaboration with the city, Erfurt’s universities are once again hosting a joint public lecture series during the 2026/27 winter semester, thereby literally bringing the university ‘into the city’. The focus will be on socially relevant topics, which will be examined from the perspective of various academic disciplines and then discussed – this time on the theme of ‘War and Peace’.
