The ongoing digitalisation of warfare is giving rise to a new level of speed, range and complexity in the conduct of war, whilst at the same time comparatively simple, robust weapons – often perceived as obsolete – are experiencing a renaissance. Many of the new military technologies overlap with civilian technologies, particularly with regard to the shared underlying critical infrastructure. In his lecture, Professor Dr.-Ing. Markus Färber aims to explain some of these technologies from a computer science perspective and offer his assessment of why maintaining peace is not only a moral imperative but is also becoming a practical necessity.
The speaker:
Markus Färber has been Professor of Computer Science at the Erfurt Campus of IU Internationale Hochschule since the winter semester of 2025. He studied computer science at Dresden University of Technology and later obtained his PhD in the field of graphical data processing at Ilmenau University of Technology. Together with his colleagues there, he founded Softvise GmbH in 2014. The company produces 3D project verification and decision-support software used in engineering projects within the automotive and aerospace industries, as well as in critical energy and transport infrastructure. Markus Färber teaches in various areas of software engineering. His research interests lie in the digitalisation of the construction industry, digital factory planning, as well as computer graphics and CAD, with related fields such as data analytics, big data and artificial intelligence.
Admission to the lectures in this lecture series is free. However, please note that seating in the Town Hall Ballroom is limited to 180 places.
