long-term study fees

(fees for exceeding the standard period of study)

Thuringia's higher education institutions are required to charge fees for exceeding the standard period of study in accordance with Section 4 of the Thuringia Higher Education Fees and Charges Act (ThürHGEG) of 21 December 2006 (GVBl. p. 601), as amended.

Students who have exceeded the standard period of study of their currently chosen undergraduate or consecutive degree programme by more than four semesters must pay a fee of 500 euros per semester in addition to the semester contribution.

All semesters completed at a higher education institution within the scope of the Higher Education Framework Act (Hochschulrahmengesetz, HRG) are included in the calculation of the fee obligation! Universities within the scope of the Higher Education Framework Act are all state or state-recognised universities in Germany. Please note that the number of university semesters is not the same as the number of subject semesters in a degree programme. Only the university semesters are decisive for determining the obligation to pay fees.

At the University of Erfurt, the standard period of study in the Bachelor's degree programme is 6 semesters. In addition to the 4 tolerance semesters, the obligation to pay fees therefore arises from the 11th university semester to be credited.

In the consecutive Master's degree programme at the University of Erfurt, the obligation to pay fees generally comes into effect from the 15th university semester to be credited.

If the obligation to pay fees is established during the application (enrolment) or re-registration, the University issues a fee notification. Based on this, the so-called long-term study fee must be paid as an additional requirement for enrolment and re-registration. Certain facts or circumstances may mean that the fee is not yet payable or can be waived.

--> for more information, see long-term study fees

senior studies

Students who have reached the age of 60 and are not subject to the fee obligation according to § 4 of the Thuringian Higher Education Fees and Charges Act (ThürHGEG) of 21 December 2006 (fees in the event of exceeding the standard period of study) must pay fees for senior studies amounting to 250.00 euros per semester in addition to the semester contribution. This will be waived on application if it can be proven that the student is receiving basic support in old age and reduced earning capacity in accordance with the Fourth Chapter of the Twelfth Book of the German Social Code.

fees for guest students

The fee for guest students is a flat rate of 50.00 euros. This fee is waived for refugees with a valid residence permit or residence title upon application.
