Discussions on the topic of resilience often focus on how a society or political system can be made resilient. This perspective of resilience management is not pursued in this book. Rather, it is about normative orientations in multiple crises, about vulnerability, about resilience strategies that people practise in the face of fear and uncertainty, and about the resilience of deeply rooted cultural behaviour. A multidisciplinary approach to the topic of resilience is the hallmark of this book: it does not, however, provide panaceas.
