This book is an extraordinary contribution to the history of Erfurt University. In his last major study, Erfurt historian Ulman Weiß († 2023) traces the entire development of the Collegium Amplonianum – the foundation which, with its famous Bibliotheca Amploniana and its more than 300 collegiates, was one of the university's formative institutions. The work impresses with its wealth of prosopographical details as well as its broad historical horizon, which extends from the 15th to the early 19th century. The volume is supplemented by a research essay by Robert Gramsch-Stehfest (University of Jena) on Amplonius von Berka, whose role in the early history of the university is reassessed. The result is a multifaceted picture of people, networks and educational paths in a long epoch of academic culture.
