Children’s University Erfurt: Young Climate Protectors Making a Big Impact!

How do you become a plastic detective? Why is waste more than just trash? And how can you create something new from old cans? Seventy elementary school children recently explored the world of climate protection in a playful way at the Institute for Planetary Health Behaviour (IPB) as part of the Children’s University Erfurt.

Under the motto "Heroes of the Future – Children Shape Their World", 70 children from four elementary school classes in Erfurt visited the Institute for Planetary Health Behaviour (IPB) as part of the Children's University Erfurt. In the workshops, various aspects of climate change were introduced in a playful manner, aiming to equip children with tools to shape their future sustainably.

The workshop concepts were developed by students of the University of Erfurt during a Studium Fundamentale course under the guidance of Dr. Stefanie Lindow and Dr. Sabine Best. The students learned how to present complex climate protection topics in a child-friendly way—demonstrating great creativity and success. Their ideas ranged from videos featuring a plastic detective on a supermarket mission, to assembling small waste deposits for classroom observation, and even upcycling cans and other materials.

When asked at the end of the workshop how they liked the experience, every child confidently raised their thumbs up—followed by enthusiastic applause for the dedicated work of the students.
