The BMBF-funded research network "Dictatorship Experience and Transformation" invites you to its next (digital) colloquium on Thursday, 21 January. It starts at 4 pm. The topic this time is "Talking to contemporary witnesses about civics lessons. Experiences and results from a research project". Prof. Dr Tilman Grammes from the University of Hamburg will be the guest.

Pupils in civics class 8 in the 1970s.
Pupils in civics class 8 in the 1970s.

As a two-hour subsidiary subject, civics in the GDR was at best a footnote in world history. However, the reconstruction of the everyday life of the class enables us to examine the functional mechanisms of a "guardian state" as if in a burning mirror. What role can contemporary witnesses play in a multi-level analysis? This question will be explored in the course of the event using the example of individual and group interviews with teachers, pupils and teaching methodologists from the GDR. To what extent is it possible to experience civics lessons "authentically" in a re-enactment today? Tilman Grammes will present and discuss material from several research projects on the everyday and social history of civics education in the GDR.

The colloquium will take place digital via the Cisco Webex platform.
