Information from the organiser

Longtermism is the current hype ideology of Silicon Valley. Billionaires like Elon Musk are committed to its ideas, philanthropic foundations spend millions on promoting longtermist ideas, and longtermist ideologemes underpin the official corporate policy of companies like OpenAI. But the fight against the left and trade unions as well as the alliance of tech capital with the Trump administration are also justified with set pieces of longtermist thinking.

The lecture takes a social science perspective on the ideology of longtermism. Its function in digital capitalism will be analysed. Classics of sociology will be used to explain why this ideology is developing in a fascist direction.

Max Franz Johann Schnetker is doing his doctorate at the University of Bonn on digital capitalism, new ideologies such as transhumanism and longtermism and the ideology and reality of artificial intelligence.
