The computers and laptops administered by the URMZ for staff at the University of Erfurt have now been upgraded or replaced with Windows 11. People who administer their Windows devices themselves must carry out the upgrade to Windows 11 themselves and are asked to do so as quickly as possible so as not to jeopardise IT security in the University of Erfurt network.
The University Computer and Media Centre would also like to point out that the cost-neutral renewals of the security updates for Windows 10 offered by Microsoft cannot be used for self-administered devices. This is only available for the Home version of Windows 10 and not for the Enterprise version, which is used on these devices.
Information on upgrading to Windows 11 for self-administered Windows 10 devices:
Administrators who manage their devices independently can upgrade to Windows 11 themselves, provided the following requirements are met:
Check system requirements
Windows 11 requires certain hardware features, including:
- TPM 2.0 (Trusted Platform Module)
- Enabled Secure Boot (BIOS)
- Compatible CPU according to the Microsoft list (https://learn.microsoft.com/de-de/windows-hardware/design/minimum/supported/windows-11-supported-intel-processors)
- The examination can be carried out with the official PC Health Check Tool (https://aka.ms/GetPCHealthCheckApp).
Carry out a data backup
Before upgrading, it is strongly recommended that you create a complete backup of all relevant data and system settings.
Windows Update
If the device fulfils the requirements, Windows 11 will be offered via the integrated Windows Update function.
The process can be started under Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
