Frank Ettrich was a charismatic lecturer and colleague who impressed with his knowledge and was not afraid to take controversial positions.
Ettrich studied sociology and Philosophy at Humboldt University in Berlin. He initially worked as a research assistant at the Institute of Sociology at Humboldt University, before moving to the Chair of Sociology at the University of Education (PH) in Erfurt in 1990. For 30 years, Ettrich was the holder of the professorship for Structural Analysis of Modern Societies at the PH and later at the Faculty of Economics, Law and Social Sciences at the University of Erfurt. He also taught internationally through DAAD lectureships at the University of Toronto and several times at St. Petersburg State University. He was co-founder, editor-in-chief and co-publisher of the Berlin Journal of Sociology and a proven expert on transformation processes, structural functionalism and Max Weber.
As deputy director and later director of the Willy Brandt School of Public Policy at the University of Erfurt, Frank Ettrich played a decisive role in shaping and influencing its development. In his role as Vice-President of the University of Erfurt, he played a key role in shaping the university's focus and structure in the years following its re-establishment. He also made a significant contribution to research, the promotion of young academics and internationalisation, set clear goals and defended the university in the competition for funding among Thuringian universities.
The President of the University of Erfurt, Professor Walter Bauer-Wabnegg, expressed his sadness: "The entire Presidium is deeply saddened by this sudden loss. Our colleague Frank Ettrich played a decisive role in shaping the University of Erfurt over decades, both in its early years after its re-establishment as a university and in the important middle years around 2007, when it had to assert itself in Thuringia by sharpening its profile. With great energy, his characteristic intellectual acuity and strategic foresight, Professor Ettrich, also in his role as Vice President for Research, Young Academics and International Affairs, provided important impetus during this period and contributed in particular to the international positioning of the university. With his passing, we have lost a determined visionary and scientist who always championed the university with great resolve. We will honour his memory."
Professor Miriam Zschoche, Dean of the Faculty of Economics, Law and Social Sciences, also looks back on his work with great appreciation: “With Frank Ettrich, we have lost an extraordinary personality and a valued colleague who impressed with his erudition and intelligence. He had a significant influence on the faculty since its foundation and also left a clear mark beyond the faculty.”
Professor Heike Grimm, Vice Director of the Willy Brandt School of Public Policy, adds: "Frank Ettrich was an extraordinary personality, a committed promoter of sound scientific work and an inspiring companion who had a lasting impact on and enriched the Faculty of Economics, Law and Social Sciences and the Willy Brandt School of Public Policy. In his biography, as in his research on comparative sociological theories, transformation processes and social change, he embodied a rare link between East and West and was in the right place at the right time. Through his attitude, foresight and exemplary commitment, he left a mark that goes far beyond the academic sphere. His work will live on among his students and colleagues. We extend our sincere sympathy and deepest condolences to his family and friends."
