Work and skills development

Secure and varied workplace

The University of Erfurt is one of the oldest and at the same time one of the youngest state universities in Germany. Since its foundation in 1994, the University of Erfurt has firmly established itself in the national and international university landscape with an explicit cultural and social science profile. It offers secure employment and attractive remuneration in accordance with the collective labour agreement and the Salaries Act. The dovetailing of science and administration brings a lot of variety to the daily work routine.

Onboarding

To make it easier for new employees to join the university, the onboarding process should be clearly structured and characterised by a feeling of "We're glad you're here!" / "Welcome on board!".

Competence-oriented personnel development

The qualification and development of their academic and academic-administrative staff has also become increasingly important for universities. Flexible working time models & time off

Flexitime

The flexible organisation of working hours enables employees to determine their own working hours within the defined limits. This allows them to better reconcile private interests with work requirements.

Telework and mobile work

Location-flexible working in the context of teleworking and mobile working provides a wide range of options for making work organisation more flexible in order to ensure a good work-life balance and thus increase employee motivation and job satisfaction.

Part-time

Employees have the option of reducing their working hours and working on individual part-time models to improve their work-life balance.

Recreational leave and leaves of absence

All employees are generally entitled to 30 working days ' holiday per calendar year. In addition, Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve are full days off.

There is also the option of taking educational leave.

The University of Erfurt also supports sabbaticals, also known as sabbatical years. This model allows employees to take a temporary break from their everyday working life and then return to work. Reasons can include further education, parenting, care leave, social commitment, recreation, travelling, etc. However, it can also be used for a smooth, i.e. seamless transition into retirement.

The University Sports Club (USV) Erfurt e. V. (Universitätssportverein Erfurt e. V.) provides the entire university sports programme for students and employees of the University of Erfurt and Erfurt University of Applied Sciences. Family and care

Family-friendly university

Families welcome! The University of Erfurt strongly supports the creation of suitable framework conditions in order to be able to combine private and professional requirements as well as possible. Among other things, committee and meeting times are organised in a family-friendly way, mobile toy boxes are available and there is a parent-child room. The Studierendenwerk runs two childcare facilities, one on campus and one flexible childcare facility in the city centre.

Caring for relatives

The University of Erfurt offers comprehensive counselling and support services on the topic of caring for relatives. The company care kit provides a comprehensive overview of "Care in Thuringia". Financial benefits

Remuneration according to tariff

The employees of the University of Erfurt are remunerated in accordance with the collective agreement for the public service of the federal states (TV-L) and the Thuringian Salaries Act (Thüringer Besoldungsgesetz) and benefit from pay increases at regular intervals.

Company pension scheme

Employees covered by collective agreements receive a supplementary company pension for old age and reduced earning capacity through the Versorgungsanstalt des Bundes und der Länder. The VBL also offers additional voluntary insurance schemes. VBL

Special annual payment

In November of each year, a staggered annual special payment is made to all employees covered by collective agreements.

Infrastructure

Parking

The University of Erfurt has a publicly accessible and free car park on the west side of the campus (An der Parkharfe) and three appropriately marked car parks on campus (subject to a charge).

Connection to local public transport

There is a train stop directly at the main entrance to the University of Erfurt, where two light rail lines run regularly.

Green Campus

The university campus is characterised by many green spaces and numerous trees. The proximity to the large Nordpark invites you to take a nice walk during your lunch break.

University Library

The Erfurt University Library is a central service facility of the university. It provides significant support for study, teaching and research. With a user-orientated collection development (conventional and digital), it offers reference use, local loans, document delivery services and access to a wide range of digital content. It also offers a comprehensive range of advice and support on all aspects of research data management and digital humanities. Events

Company outing
Since 2016, Health Management has been organising the annual company outings for the central administration as a contribution to university health promotion. The focus is on active exercise in the fresh air for employees. Hikes as well as sporting activities such as canoeing and cycling are included in the programme.

Campus run
The annual campus run takes place in mid-June and all employees are invited to take part - whether in an individual 10 km run or with colleagues as a team; children can also take part in the Bambini run.

Diversity

Diversity is an integral part of the University of Erfurt's profile and is therefore also present on campus every day. The university sees diversity as an opportunity. Everyone can benefit from an open and constructive approach to diversity, individuality and plurality.

Internet access

The comprehensive WLAN network "eduroam" enables a wireless connection with smartphones and laptops. This gives employees comprehensive access to central university services, availability at virtually all locations and the opportunity to use eduroam with their university account wherever it is offered (e.g. other colleges, universities and research organisations throughout Germany).


By the way...

In November 2025, the University of Erfurt was awarded the "Thuringian Seal for Healthy Work" for its health promotion measures.

The seal is awarded to companies and public service organisations that voluntarily undergo an examination of their health-promoting measures based on defined criteria. After successfully completing the certification process, the University of Erfurt achieved the highest "Gold" level at the first attempt.
