Opening event of the lecture series "Religion and Urbanity Across Time and Space"

With the lecture "How Religions Change in Cities" by Jörg Rüpke, the lecture series of the research group "Religion and Urbanity: Mutual Formations" will start on Tuesday, 17 November at 6 pm.

Professor Jörg Rüpke (University of Erfurt) gives a first overview of fields of change in religious practices in cities and examines, among other things, the aspects of monumentality and mass rituals, writing and theatre. Even though much of this can be found outside of cities or even chronologically before urbanisation, typical changes and an interplay of religion and urbanity can be identified. This "double biography" is to be placed in the foreground.

In nine further lectures by experts from all over the world, the lecture series will then take place every Tuesday from 6 p.m. to 7.30 p.m. and will shed light on how urban life, atmosphere and visions of living together in the city have changed religion and spirituality. Obvious traces of such changes can be found in architecture and rituals or even liturgies, in theology and forms of organisation of religions. The series presents exemplary cases of such changes in old Indian and contemporary North American cities, in Erfurt and Berlin, with a view to individual "martyrdom" or mass rituals.

The lecture series can be viewed on YouTube, even beyond the actual lecture period:
