FDM Days in June: University of Erfurt is taking part!

The Thuringian Research Data Management Days (FDM Days) are taking place for the fourth time from 20 to 24 June. The University of Erfurt is also taking part this year.

Digital tools for research data management will be presented at each of the four Thuringian university locations as part of the FDM Days. The Erfurt contribution on 21 June from 11.30 a.m. to 3 p.m. revolves around the topic "Linotypes and Looms – In effizienten Strukturen Daten erfassen und Muster sichtbar machen" (Linotypes and Looms – Capturing Data and Making Patterns Visible in Efficient Structures): Linotypes as the standard of newspaper typesetting enabled the daily writing of the latest events for a mass audience. The development of punched cards for Jacquard looms made it possible to isolate and pass on patterns independently of the fabric in which they were woven. Experts who could operate these instruments were in great demand during industrialisation, without them no article would have been printed and no shawl woven. This combination of quality-assuring structure and human expertise is also central to the creation of new knowledge. Researchers are intensively engaged in recording and analysing oral and written certificates and can draw on research environments that are similarly specialised in their approach and universal in their applications as linotypes and looms. Since both the decision to acquire such a tool and the investment in the development of the expert knowledge necessary for its competent use need to be well considered, the Thuringian FDM Days will make it possible to experience two research environments for the humanities as part of the Erfurt workshop.

All online events of the FDM Days will be accompanied by short lectures and workshops, which are intended to give an insight into the applications and make it possible to test them. All interested parties are invited to attend. Participation is free of charge, but registration on the programme website is required.
