KLIMA-N at ESD conference in Vechta: How service learning combines theory and practice

From 1 to 3 September 2025, the conference "Innovative Formats for Education for Sustainable Development in Higher Education" took place at the University of Vechta. Dr Hasnain Bokhari presented results on the use of service learning in cooperation with companies as an effective format for linking theory and practice.

The KLIMA-N project was represented with two contributions at the conference "Innovative Formats for Education for Sustainable Development in Higher Education".

In his presentation, Dr Hasnain Bokhari from the University of Erfurt presented key findings from his research into the conditions for the success of practice-oriented ESD (Education for Sustainable Development). He focussed on the use of service learning in cooperation with companies as an effective format for linking theory and practice.

Dr Mira Rochyadi-Reetz and Professor Jens Wolling from TU Ilmenau presented an interdisciplinary teaching project on waste separation that brings together students from two faculties - Mechanical Engineering and Business and Media. The aim of the project is to promote sustainable thinking and action in a practical and interdisciplinary way.

Both contributions showed how education for sustainable development can be implemented innovatively and effectively in lecturers. In addition to their own contributions, the speakers also took away many new ideas and insights on the topic of ESD. The conference also offered valuable opportunities to exchange ideas and network with experts from all over Germany - an important basis for anchoring the topic of education for sustainable development even more firmly in lecturers in the future.
