Application for a Bachelor's or Master's Degree or for PhD studies

International applicants from Non-EU countries who are interested in pursuing their Bachelor's, Master's or PhD studies at the University of Erfurt, apply via our online application portal. You find the link to the portal and detailed application information in the respective tabs below. The application deadline for the Winter semester is July 15.

Attention! This year's application deadline for Bachelor programs has been postponed to August 20, 2020 due to the Coronavirus situation.

At the moment of application international applicants have to prove German language proficiency of the level B1 (CEFR) minimum. This rule applies to all Bacherlor's and almost all Master's programs, except the Master's of Global Communication, Religious Studies and Public Policy whose language of instruction is English.

Applicants with EU-citizenship or German applicants with a foreign higher education entrance qualification apply via the Study Affairs Office, but have to prove sufficient German language knowledge as well.

The University of Erfurt is specialised in the arts and humanities with a particular focus on cultural and social sciences. Therefore it does not issue conditional letters of acceptance for Bachelor students to the T-course of the Studienkolleg.

Application for Bachelor Studies

The first step of the application for a Bachelor's program is the online application. After submitting the online application, a pdf will be provided which you can save and print. The  signed online form has to be sent via postal mail to the International Office together with the required documents. The application deadline is July 15.

Attention! Due to the Coronavirus situation, this year's application deadline for Bachelor programs has been postponed to August 20, 2020.

Upon receipt of the complete application documents it will take approx. 4 weeks to process. Afterwards, the letter of notification will be sent via postal mail.

Required documents

For an application for Bachelor studies the following documents have to be handed in:

  • completed and signed application form
  • curriculum vitae including passport-size photograph
  • certified copies and official translations of secondary school leaving certificates (higher education entrance qualification/ high school diploma/ "Abitur"; the certificates should give exact information  about achieved grades
  • if applicable: certified copies and official translations of entry examinations to institutions of higher education, or of any program or degree obtained in the country of origin
  • proof of German language skills on level B1 (according to CEFR) or higher
  • if applicable: supporting documents and information regarding the selection and aptitude assessment procedures as per study- and examination regulations of the chosen degree programme ( see website of the programme)
  • passport copy

Admission to the “Studienkolleg”

Applicants whose school leaving certificate is not recognized as being equivalent to the German general higher education entrance qualification (Abitur) can apply for admission to a pre-university program (Studienkolleg) and take an assessment test (Feststellungsprüfung). The Staatliches Studienkolleg Thüringen is located in Nordhausen, 70 kilometers to the north of Erfurt.

The University of Erfurt is specialised in the arts and humanities with a particular focus on cultural and social sciences. Therefore it does not issue conditional letters of acceptance to the T-course of the Studienkolleg.

Application for Master Studies

The first step of the application for a Master's program is the online application. After submitting the online application, a pdf will be provided which you can save and print. The  signed online form has to be sent via postal mail to the International Office together with the required documents. The application deadline is July 15.

Upon receipt of the complete application documents will be checked by the International Office and then handed to the examination board of the  faculty. After the decision, the letter of notification will be sent via postal mail.

For the Master programme "Public Policy" (tuition fees) please apply directly at the Willy Brandt School of Public Policy.

Application documents

For an application for Master studies the following documents have to be handed in:

  • completed and signed application form
  • curriculum vitae including passport-size photograph
  • statement of proposed study giving a clear description of your study objectives
  • officially certified copies and official translations of the transcript of records/grades of your current or previous University studies including the obtained degree (i.e. Bachelor's degree) giving information about achieved grades as well as about study contents
  • officially certified copies and official translations of secondary school leaving certificates the certificates should give
  • proof of German language skills on level B1 (according to CEFR) or higher, except for Global Communication and Religious Studies
  • For Global Communication and Religious Studies: proof of English language skills
  • copy of passport

The first step of the application for the Master's of Catholic Theology is the online application. After submitting the online application, a pdf will be provided which you can save and print. The  signed online form has to be sent via postal mail to the International Office together with the required documents. The application deadline is July 15.

  • if applicable: certified copies and official translations of entry examinations to institutions of higher education, or of any program or degree obtained in the country of origin
