In this volume, the European coordinate "Religion und Politik" comes into focus and with it the pre-political and political significance of fundamental religious and philosophical convictions for Europe: it is not only because of the Russian invasion of Ukraine that Europe finds itself in what is probably the greatest crisis since the end of the Second World War. In view of the dangers of renationalisation, populism and the resurgence of conflicts and tensions that were thought to have been overcome, there is a need to think anew about Europe: What are the coordinates that particularly shape European identity?

This volume discusses the complex relationship between the religious and the political, between church(es) and religious communities and the state, or between salvation and rule. In addition to the influences of Christianity, influences from Judaism, Islam, Eastern religions and secular philosophies are also important. In Europe, the political is not the ultimate framework, but rather is placed in a wider context. The focus is on people and their freedom, especially in religious and ideological matters. This gives Europe an anti-totalitarian basic character that protects human dignity which is often ignored and violated even today.
