This Pauly Supplement volume explores the religions of the Greco-Roman world in 86 articles in English and German, from ancestors and asceticism to knowledge and widows. The contributions focus on the use of religious actions or meanings by ancient actors in a variety of areas and situations of social interaction. Combining encyclopaedic information and essayistic overview, they describe how people of the ancient Mediterranean world used religion routinely, unconsciously or consciously, exceptionally or strategically. Ancient religion is presented in this volume as "lived religion", as "ancient religion in context".
