The Ausonius Prize has been awarded since 1998 by Departments II and III of Trier University in recognition of outstanding academic work or an outstanding body of work in the field of Ancient History and Classical Philology. It is named after the poet Ausonius, who worked in Trier in late antiquity and is best known for his work Mosella.
This year's winner, Professor Wolfgang Spickermann, is an ancient historian and worked at the Max-Weber-Kolleg at the University of Erfurt from 2009–2013, also as its director from 2011–2013, before moving to the University of Graz, where he currently holds the professorship for Ancient History. He is still associated with the Max-Weber-Kolleg and, together with Professor Jörg Rüpke (Co-Director of the Max-Weber-Kolleg), he heads the international graduate school that the Max-Weber-Kolleg runs with the University of Graz: "Resonant Self-World Relations in Socio-Religious Practices in Antiquity and the Present".
The prize is awarded to him for his achievements in the field of ancient history, in particular for his work on Lucian, epigraphy and religion in the Germanic provinces of the Roman Empire.
