Structural Funding

[Translate to English:] Struktur

One of the main concerns of the University of Erfurt is the promotion of networking between (junior) researchers of different subject areas and institutions as well as the establishment of research structures, which serve to stimulate third-party funding projects. Therefore, the different funding concepts of the structural funding help researchers to cooperate in planned or already established structures in order to (further) develop or establish medium to long-term and mostly interdisciplinary research programmes.
As a consequence thereof the support for and the establishment of research structures serves to prepare for third-party fundings. Next to the financial funding by in-house funds (based on standardised application procesures, in which some of them are subject to a time period), the Research and Graduate Services offers individual consulting and strategical support for individual application purposes, groups or networks.

Research Groups

The "Research Group" funding format aims at professors. Research groups serve to connect several scientists within the University of Erfurt and their thematic research interests and links them structurally in a common research programme. A research group jointly pursues long-term projects (joint projects), the development and acquisition of research projects and the establishment of collaborations. They contribute to the strategic research orientation of the university.

Research groups can be established for up to three years. Once established, they can receive an annual budget of up to 10,000 EUR. Under special conditions, research groups can also apply for the funding of their own coordination staff.

APPLICATION AND INSTITUTION
Currently, it is not possible to apply for the establishment of research groups. The possibility of applying for an establishment from 2023 onwards is being assessed.

The institution will be established after the application has been reviewed by the Research and Graduate Services based on a vote of the Senate Committee for Research and Graduate Development and a resolution by the Presidium.

Research Units

The "Research Units" funding format aims at professors and postdocs. Research units serve to establish individual projects of one or two researcher at the University of Erfurt and to develop and raise smaller research projects. The research unit bundles medium up to long-term projects. In addition, cooperations can be established or expanded and other researchers can become associated members.

Research units are established on a non-expiring basis. They do not receive a basic financial funding, but may apply for other forms of in-house fundings.

APPLICATION AND INSTITUTION
A research unit is established by the Presidium through application via the Research and Graduate Services.
Please contact the Research and Graduate Services for an application.

Research Networks

The "Research Networks" funding format aims professors and the research staff of the university. Research networks serve to bundle different research topics or rather the long-term, joint processing of a spectrum of different questions from a common topic area by different researcher at the University of Erfurt cooperating. Strengthening cooperation(s) and (further) developing joint research projects is the main goal of this format.

Scientists who would like to establish themselves as a group but do not have yet defined a common framework programme can apply for this format and maintain the official status of a "(research) network". However, research networks can also already have a framework programme and have been transferred from previous research groups funded by the university or by third-party funds.

APPLICATION AND INSTITUTION
The application for a the establishment of a research network must been submitted to the Presidium via the Research and Graduate Services. The Presidium then decides on the formal establishment of the new research network.
Research networks can be established at any time.

Early Stage Researcher Networks

Unfortunately, it is currently not possible to apply for the uni-internal funding of Early Stage Researcher Networks.

This funding opportunity intends to give early stage researchers the opportunity to implement already planned networking meetings (workshops, small group meetings etc.) or to launch new network initiatives. Those can be internal, regional, national or even international. The funding serves as an stimulus for early stage researchers to establish their own medium or long term networks and, based on this, seeking for third-party fundings for early stage researcher networks (e.g. from the DFG).

Networks or network initiatives can be supported with a maximum of 800 EUR per year. The funds can be used for workshops or conference costs, travel expenses and, if applicable, for fee contracts of guest lecturers. Meal costs or daily allowances cannot be financed.

The support is initially granted for 12 months. Onward funding is possible.

APPLICATION AND AWARDING
Applications can be submitted at any time at the Research and Graduate Services.
The award decision is made after the application has been reviewed by the Research and Graduate Services by a vote of a member of the Senate Committee for Research and Graduate Development.
