Exhibition "Fairs, towns and merchants (1350–1600)" in the KIZ

The exhibition "Fairs, Cities and Merchants (1350–1600)" can be seen in the foyer of the Centre for Communication and Information (KIZ) at the University of Erfurt from 2 October to 31 December. It traces the history of European trade fairs from the middle of the 14th century to the beginning of the 17th century. On display are documents and objects that were created or used in the context of trade fairs and trade.

Trade fairs played a decisive role in trade in pre-modern Europe. They were of considerable economic importance for the cities that organised them and were also a major attraction that brought traders and many other visitors to the cities. The exhibition now on display at the KIZ, which has already been shown in Lyon and other locations, was developed as part of the research project "Configurations of European Fairs. Merchants, Objects, Routes (ca. 1350–1600)" research project by historians from the University of Erfurt. In line with this research, the cities and fairs referred to in the show are therefore mainly located in France, German, Switzerland and Italy.
