The Göttingen church historian and Reformation expert has created a new standard work with his latest publication on the Peasants‘ War. His monograph differs from other accounts of the Peasants’ War in its media-historical approach. This enables him to gain new perspectives on the Peasants' War. Kaufmann's core thesis is that the Peasants' War was the first major media event in the age of emerging pamphleteering and book printing, in which numerous war events were summarised under a collective term. In his study, Kaufmann focuses less on the events themselves than on their contemporary media coverage and the associated images and topoi of the peasantry. Accompanying his lecture, the Gotha Research Library is exhibiting manuscripts and prints on the Peasants' War in the Hall of Mirrors and publishing blog posts on the subject.
Thomas Kaufmann is a Leibniz Prize winner and currently also Scientific Director of the Göttingen State and University Library. He also was an active advisor to the Gotha Research Library during the Reformation Decade.
