Max-Weber-Kolleg welcomes new members in the summer semester 2022

The research group "Religion and Urbanity: Reciprocal Formations", which focuses also on India, welcomes the following new fellows this semester: Prof. Dr. Luca Aracari (Italy) with the project: Communication and Early Christianity in Alexandria (2nd century CE). The Treatise on the "Divine Monarchy" as a "Test Case", Prof. Dr. Ranabir Chakravarti (India) with the project Religious Networks and the Making of Maritime Cities: Case Studies of Reciprocity in South Asia (c. 500-1300 CE), Prof. Dr. Jörg Frey (Switzerland) with the project The Gospel of John against the Background of the Ephesian Urban Society of the 1st/2nd Century CE, Prof. Dr. Epsita Halder (India) with the project Everyday Shi'ism Online: Use of Social Media and the Contest over Urban Space (Kolkata, India), Prof. Dr. Annette Haug (Germany) with the project Talking with, about, and in the presence of the Gods: Graffiti in Pompei, Prof. Dr. Gil Klein (USA) with the project Urbanism as Ritual: City Planning in Roman Religion and Rabbinic Judaism, Prof. Dr. Harry Maier (Canada) with the project Urban Space-Time in Second Century Christ Religion, Dr. Judit Majorossy (Austria) with the project Spaces and Ways of Belonging: The Religiosity of Changing Urban Communities in Late Medieval East Central Europe and Prof. Dr. Anne Murphy (Canada) with the project Religious crossroads at the intersection of the mofussil (non-urban region), the secondary urban centre, and the imperial centre in early modern North India. 

The research group "Social Philosophy and Social Theory" welcomes a new predoc, Noah Grossmann, who wants to prepare a project on experiences of transcendence in techno.

Within the framework of the new Collaborative Research Centre (SFB TRR 294) "Structural Change of Property" in cooperation with the University of Jena, we can also welcome a new predoc, Xu Han (China), who will work in the context of Prof. Dr. Carsten Herrmann-Pillath's China project.

The International Centre of Advanced Studies "Metamorphoses of the Political" (ICAS-MP) once again welcomes Dr Shelley Feldman (USA), who will work on the project Stigma in the City: Making and Unmaking Mumbai City.

The Meister Eckhart Research Unit supervises a new predoc, Dina Bijelić, who wishes to develop a project on apocryphality using the Gral narrative as an example.

The directors of the Max-Weber-Kolleg, Hartmut Rosa and Jörg Rüpke, are pleased about the newcomers from Germany and abroad and emphasise: "We are glad to have a place of interdisciplinary and international exchange where scholars can research freely and safely. We are also supporting researchers who are not in this situation due to the war in Ukraine by offering a fellowship within the framework of the collaborative research group "Religion and Urbanity" as well as other funding opportunities, and thus want to show our solidarity."
