Professor Dr Andrea Dorothea Bührmann studied Sociology, Philosophy and Political Science and received her doctorate from the University of Münster in 1995.

She completed further education as a personnel officer and was a research assistant at the Chair of General Sociology at the University of Paderborn. In 2003, following a DFG scholarship, she completed her habilitation in general sociology.

After holding university professorships in Dortmund, Munich and Münster as well as visiting professorships at the Universities of Salzburg and Vienna, Andrea D. Bührmann became an adjunct professor at the University of Münster in 2009 and a professor at the University of Göttingen in 2011.

Since autumn 2013, Professor Dr Andrea D. Bührmann has been managing director of the Institute for Diversity Research, which she founded. In the following years, she conducted research as a Research Fellow at the University of California/Berkeley and held visiting professorships at the University of Klagenfurt and the German Institute for Japanese Studies in Tokyo.

From 2013 to 2015, Andrea D. Bührmann was Dean of Research at the Faculty of Social Sciences, Vice President for Studies and Teaching between 2015 and 2017 and, following her re-election, Vice President for Studies, Teaching and Equal Opportunities at the University of Göttingen between 2017 and 2021. Since 2021, Andrea D. Bührmann has been the spokesperson for the State Working Group of Institutions for Women's and Gender Studies in Lower Saxony (LAGEN).

Professor Dr Andrea D. Bührmann is the author of numerous research and practice-related publications. Her work is regularly featured in national media, including the FAZ, SZ, ARD, ZDF, 3sat and n-tv. She has been advising various institutions in the European and German science system for many years. She also advises various international and national companies, universities, local authorities and NGOs on the design, implementation, realisation and evaluation of diversity strategies. She has advised the University of Erfurt as an auditor as part of the "Shaping Diversity" audit by the Stifterverband für die Wissenschaft.

Since 1 October 2023, Professor Dr Andrea D. Bührmann has been a member of the University Council of the University of Erfurt and has chaired it since 1 October 2023.
