Change at the top of the Willy Brandt School of Public Policy

Andreas Goldthau is the new Director of the Willy Brandt School of Public Policy at the University of Erfurt. The holder of the Franz Haniel Professorship for Public Policy was previously the deputy Director and will take over from Professor Achim Kemmerling on 1 April 2022. The ceremonial handover of office will take place on 23 May 2022 in Haus Dacheröden.

The two professors will combine the event with their respective "inaugural lectures" in the form of a joint discussion entitled: "Just transitions: How can socio-economic inequalities of climate change be addressed?". After all, rapidly rising energy prices are just one example of how climate change is transforming our society. Perhaps the biggest challenge of the next decades will be how to succeed in decarbonisation without leading to a massive increase in social and economic inequality. Several dimensions of inequality overlap here. Globally, the countries that are most affected are often those that contribute least to causing climate change. Within countries, in turn, it is often the poorer sections of the population that suffer the most. What do we know about the extent of these types of inequalities? And what global but also national forms of social compensation can we create so that the successful fight against climate change is not at the expense of the weaker?

Answers to these questions will be found during this evening. The discussion will be opened by Bundestag Vice President Katrin Göring-Eckart (MdB).

Please note: The event is for invited guests only. Invitations will be sent out in April.
