The research project “Perthes kolonial” at the University of Erfurt is investigating how colonial cartography was produced, used and marketed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and what role the Gotha-based publisher Justus Perthes played in this. The project also aims to systematically analyse the interconnection between economic interests, knowledge production and colonial orders using the Perthes collection, thereby providing new impetus for research into colonial knowledge cultures.
