Flower strips, Viva con Druck and more

At the Centre for Communication and Information (KIZ) at the University of Erfurt, students from the "Studium Fundamentale Sustainability" (StuFu) course are presenting the projects they developed last semester with the support of various practice partners. The aim was to raise awareness of sustainable development in Erfurt.

Students are currently presenting the results of the StuFu "Sustainability" at the KIZ.

The students put a lot of time and effort into the projects, but in the end everyone agreed: it was worth it!

For example, there was a stand at the "City in Transition" campaign day about the Thuringian universities' climate network, which focussed on ideas on how to make the cathedral square greener. The students engaged in lively discussions with visitors.

Another group of students designed a course unit to deal constructively with controversial and climate-sceptical positions and refute them with arguments. The aim was to provide information about climate change and its consequences and to practise debating them. Everyone was given their own role for this discussion, which they each had to represent. This gave them plenty of scope to practise sound argumentation and to reflect on different ways of arguing and different perspectives.

The “Electricity Saving Check” group had set itself the goal of trying out a free counselling service offered by Caritas for low-income households, including students who receive “BAföG”. To this end, the group thought about how the service could be made more visible and accessible to young people.

With the project "What's buzzing there?", which was developed by StuFu students, they want to familiarise primary school children with the importance of wild and honey bees through a project day. Afterwards, the children will build their own insect hotels with natural materials, which they can then take home with them.

In addition, some students themselves have taken the initiative to make a lasting change in Erfurt: In collaboration with the “Fuchsfarm”, a project day was organised to educate children about insects and the threat they pose to the ecosystem. They sowed wildflower seeds to provide the insects with a new area.

Another project with primary school children took place at "LebensGut Cobstädt". The children learnt about sheep and goats, wild herbs and cereals using research booklets. At the same time, the students were able to test the "LebensGut" as a future extracurricular learning centre.

Another active group organised a clothing bazaar at “Roter Berg” together with teh “Caritas”. The bazaar was a great success for them, with many conversations, advice on suitable clothing sizes, for example, and around 70 visitors.

And finally, two students organised a stand for the campus festival 2025 and the flea market “Am Hügel”, for which they redesigned old clothes using screen printing. The motifs were all centred around the theme of water. The practical partner here was Viva con Agua, a non-profit organisation thatsupports water projects worldwide. And so the donations – 106 euros – that were collected at the campus festival and the flea market were donated to the organisation to support its work.

Anyone wanting to find out more about the projects should be quick now. The presentation can only be seen in the KIZ until 16 July.
