IMPACTS – Investigating Motivations, Practices and Unintentional Consumption of Toxic Skin-Lightening

Harmful skin lightening is a complex public health and social problem that is widespread in many countries of the Global South, especially in sub-Saharan Africa. The practice is shaped by beauty ideals, social and economic expectations, and inadequate regulation, and poses significant health risks. Previous research has focused primarily on users, while products, sales structures and unclear labelling have been largely unexamined. The IMPACTS project aims to close this gap by analysing both the demand and supply sides. The goal is to better understand health risks, identify regulatory gaps and develop starting points for effective public health measures and communication strategies.
