Course Details

The Master's degree in Special and Inclusive Education leads to an application-oriented, scientific professional qualification for the professional support of people with disabilities and disadvantages in out-of-school contexts. The main focus of the course is on preparing students for work with children, young people and adults who need support in learning, language, behaviour and intellectual development.

The students acquire the following knowledge about:

  • individual, social and societal conditions of disability and disadvantage
  • on the design and support of teaching and learning processes,
  • on guidance, counselling and support in individual educational and developmental processes at different ages and under different conditions of disability and disadvantage.

Job & Career Perspectives

Our graduates work in the following professional fields:

  • as professional support (e.g. through counselling, guidance and care) for children, young people and adults with disabilities and disadvantages in extracurricular contexts (such as homes, assisted living or early intervention)
  • in management activities in special education and social education institutions.

Structure of the study program

The Master's program in Special and Inclusive Education has a standard period of study of four semesters and can only be taken up in the winter semester:

Mandatory modules:

  • Mentory-supported special education internship
  • Research approaches in special and inclusive education
  • Leadership and management of institutions
  • Professionalization, consulting and communication
  • Special educational psychology
  • Social Pedagogy
  • Planning, promotion, evaluation

two elective modules:

  • Pedagogy for people with mental and multiple disabilities
  • Pedagogy for people with learning disabilities
  • Pedagogy for people with disabilities in emotional and social development
  • Pedagogy for people with speech and communication impairments

Admissions qualification

  • a relevant course of study (at least 30 credit points in remedial, special or integrative education) with above-average results (final grade at least 2.5)

By way of exception, applicants may be admitted either with relevant practical experience of at least 12 months' duration in special education contexts or from degree programmes with a focus on social pedagogy of at least 30 LP, but with little previous knowledge of remedial, special and integration education. These students can be granted access with the condition that they attend introductory lectures of 9 LP from the module "Special Pedagogical Basics" (comparable to B-Fö-Ha 2012, module SOP 110) in the first year of study.

Language Center

The Language Centre (Sprachenzentrum) offers around 140 language courses per semester in 16 modern and ancient (foreign) languages. It supports you in acquiring and deepening your language skills.

International applicants whose native language is not German must provide proof of sufficient German language skills (level B1) upon application.
