Course Details

The subsidiary course of study Protestant Religion teaches you the connections between religion and society.

During your studies you will acquire knowledge about:

  • biblical sources,
  • ecclesiastical traditions,
  • Protestant teaching.

Learn how to understand the place of the Protestant Church in school and religiously pluralistic society. You will gain theological discernment and independence through your studies in order to be able to convey a responsible approach to Christian tradition and to translate central contents of the Christian faith as a meaningful offer for individual life.

During your studies you will acquire knowledge of a collection of writings or a basic topic:

  • Old and New Testament,
  • Epoch of church history,
  • Question of dogmatics or ethics,
  • The problem of religious education studies.

Protestant theology is a course of study that prepares students for religious education at primary, regular and vocational schools.

Protestant Religious Education in Detail

Structure of the study programme

The bachelor's degree course at the University of Erfurt comprises a major and a minor subject (two-subject bachelor's degree) as well as the fundamental course of study. It aims to impart specialist content and occupational field orientation as well as interdisciplinary skills. The standard period of study is six semesters.

Orientation Phase (First Year)

  • Introduction to biblical science
  • Introduction to religion in society
  • Introduction to religious education studies

Qualification Phase (Second/Third Year)

  • Deepening of biblical studies
  • Deepening of religion in society
  • Deepening of religious education studies

Two-Subject-Bachelor

The major and minor subjects differ in terms of the content and scope of the course. In the major subject a Bachelor thesis is written.

Teacher training takes place in the Bachelor-Master study system. The degree is equivalent to the 1st state examination. Following the Master's program, you will complete the preparatory service, which concludes with the 2nd state examination.

Language requirements

  • German: Upon application, international applicants must prove German language skills at level B1.
  • The knowledge of Latin is recommended.
