Course Details

In the major and minor subject of study German Studies, you will examine the German language and German-language literature with scientific methods.

The topics of German linguistics include

  • structures and functions of the contemporary German language,
  • linguistic varieties (dialects, youth language, specialised languages, etc.),
  • use of German in communication situations and media,
  • history of the German language,
  • forms and functions of language change.

Among the topics of German literature studies are

  • structures, functions and characteristics of literary texts,
  • different genres, text and sign theories,
  • questions of historical poetics,
  • current theories and methods.

Our graduates are active in these professional fields:

  • in teaching German as a foreign language at primary, regular, remedial or vocational schools (provided that a Master's programme related to teaching profession is completed),
  • in speech counselling and speech formation,
  • in the press and public relations work,
  • in management consulting and media consulting,
  • in education and training,
  • in the publishing and library sector,
  • in cultural management.

German Studies in Detail

Structure of the study programme

The bachelor's degree programme at the University of Erfurt comprises a major and a minor subject (two-subject bachelor's degree) as well as the fundamental course of study. It aims to impart specialist content and occupational field orientation as well as interdisciplinary skills. The standard period of study is six semesters.

  • Theories and methods of linguistics

The major and minor subjects differ in terms of the content and scope of the course. In the major subject a Bachelor thesis is written.

Teacher training takes place in the Bachelor-Master study system. The degree is equivalent to the 1st state examination. Following the Master's programme, you will complete the preparatory service, which concludes with the 2nd state examination.

Language requirements

Language requirements during studies

Until the end of the studies:

  • German: Upon application, international applicants must prove German language skills at level B1.
  • Mastery of two modern foreign languages at level B1 or one modern foreign language at level B1 and the Latinum (main course only)

The Language Centre (Sprachenzentrum) offers around 140 language courses per semester in 16 modern and ancient (foreign) languages. It supports you in acquiring and deepening your language skills.
